Hear hear! I'm pretty secular with my politics as well, but there's a reason the Soviets were godless. Religion can be a great bulwark against government tyranny. This is absolutely a matter involving "freedom of conscious" as you put it, despite the demagoguing.

I'm expecting the Supreme Court to gut Obamacare, but not fully kill it off. Even if that happens, it doesn't change the mindset. There will be many more calls for similar radical ideas. The best tactic for us is to be preventative and to never let these kinds of legislation pass in the first place.

I should be clear. It's not that I'm distancing myself from libertarianism in general as much as distancing myself from the libertine elements that are pervasive within the movement, and often confused by mainstream conservatives as defining libertarianism.

Speaking of Moffett's lack of name recognition, Williams' running mate Richie Farmer is one of the all time most beloved UK basketball players. I'm sure this helped Williams in Eastern KY, Farmer's home area. I'd like to see the poll numbers from the coal counties.

The statement "morally I'm not a libertarian" is confused. Libertarianism has nothing to say about personal morals. It is strictly political ideology concerning the proper role of the use of violence in society (which libertarians says is only valid in proportionate response to aggressive acts committed by others). One can be a social conservative or hold traditional Christian values personally and still be a libertarian. I put myself in that category. The fact that some libertarians are atheists (I personally would say more libertarians are Christians than not) does not mean that to be a libertarian is to be an atheist or somehow you must espouse amoralism personally. There is nothing un-libertarian about fighting a culture war, so long as it is done through voluntarily formed institutions and groups, not through coercion (government). Your position is fairly libertarian in this regard. Distancing yourself from libertarianism seems unwarranted.

Corie: I share your concern about centralization, but I am curious how you apply it to specific issues that are important to social conservatives. For example, should there be organized prayer in public school, should abortion be legal, etc? Mike
